Archiving 2026: Why CMIS is the better answer than ArchiveLink

With S/4HANA, RISE and increasing cloud scenarios, SAP architecture is fundamentally changing. New operating models, increasing integration requirements and the demand for flexible, scalable systems mean that many previous decisions must be reassessed. What is often underestimated, however, is a central, business-critical question: Which archive interface actually still fits into this new world?

18.03.2026

ArchiveLink has been a stable and proven part of classic SAP landscapes for many years. Many companies are working successfully with it, and in existing on-premise scenarios, the interface continues to reliably fulfill its purpose. At the same time, however, it is clear that the framework conditions have changed. Today, SAP systems are no longer isolated, but part of complex, hybrid landscapes that incorporate cloud platforms, third-party systems, and new integration scenarios. This is precisely where ArchiveLink is increasingly reaching its limits — not because the technology fundamentally doesn't work, but because it comes from a time when this openness and flexibility did not play a central role. Modern requirements such as cross-system integration, API-based communication and cloud readiness can only be met to a limited extent using traditional approaches.

This is exactly where CMIS comes in. As an open standard, CMIS enables a much more flexible integration of archiving solutions into modern IT architectures. The approach is clear: away from rigid system boundaries, towards open, API-based integration that fits easily into SAP, cloud and hybrid scenarios. For companies, this means more freedom in architecture, fewer dependencies on individual systems and significantly better adaptability to future requirements.

Especially in the context of S/4HANA transformations, RISE projects and cloud strategies, this topic is becoming increasingly important. Many companies are currently in a transition phase in which existing systems continue to run while new architectures are being built at the same time. It is precisely in this phase that choosing the right archive interface is the decisive step. It influences how easy it is to integrate new systems, how flexibly data can be used and how complex future adjustments will be.

For partners, this creates a clear starting point in sales. The question of the archive interface is not a technical detail, but an introduction to strategic discussions about target architectures, future security and profitability. Anyone who addresses this topic early on is not talking about a product, but about the long-term success of projects. This is not about replacing ArchiveLink across the board. The interface can continue to be used sensibly in stable existing landscapes. But wherever architectures evolve, where cloud plays a role, or where integrations beyond SAP are necessary, CMIS offers clear advantages. The decision is therefore less a question of “either/or”, but a deliberate classification in the respective context.

2026 is exactly the time for many companies to actively make this decision. The course is now being set and with them the basis for future SAP landscapes.

If you would like to delve deeper into the topic, we have presented the differences, deployment scenarios and decision factors in detail in our webinar.
