Neu-Isenburg, December 13, 2023 — The changes identified in the DSAG Investment Report 2023 gave the SAP community initial clues as to what trends can be expected in the coming year: AI, automation and sustainability at the top of the list. For document and archiving management, they result in the following forecasts:
1. The AI lights are green
AI will gradually conquer other areas and thus make intensive use of it in archiving. As of today, a separate AI will not make sense for every application in the company. As a result, AI solutions from major providers, such as SAP, will become more professional. Supporting systems, such as archiving and document management platforms, should therefore see themselves as important suppliers for these systems, from whose further development they too benefit. Delivering data cleanly and providing flexible and cloud-native interfaces — this should be the focus of future-oriented document management solutions. And AI brings another advantage to archiving: hidden archiving obligations, for example in SharePoint, or due to GDPR relevance are easier to identify, classify and finally implement.
2. IT automation
Cloud-native approaches and container solutions will continue to grow. This increases — all by itself — the level of automation of the entire IT and thus also of archiving. This has the advantage that administrators have less effort to develop and implement policy-compliant archiving concepts, because the higher the level of automation, the fewer “annoying” manual, error-prone archiving processes. This in turn relieves IT and users and, at the same time, enhances the image of archiving.
3. ESG increases companies' sustainability levels
The climate protection guidelines adopted by the EU in the form of ESG will take effect for the first time in 2024. As a first step, only large companies are affected by the reporting obligations, but suppliers are already indirectly involved and SMEs also see new sustainability concepts on the agenda for the next few years. This is intended to gradually improve sustainability in companies. In the context of archiving, any kind of quality check of the software with regard to the footprint is required! How does the supplier work, how does the solution work, what resources are required for implementation and operation. In particular, “cleaning out” archived documents can be part of a pioneering ESG concept for archiving.
